Every aquarium must create a holding and quarantine facility prior to opening. (After all, one just can’t build the building, add water and go to the local pet store to get 9- foot sharks!) Rather than create this in a warehouse district, The Living Planet formed a partnership with Salt Lake Community College, and created the Marine & Freshwater Science Institute in the fall of 2001.

This facility has led to the development of the first Marine Biology course at SLCC, as well as providing a living laboratory for college and high school interns who are interested in pursuing careers in the biological sciences.

The Marine & Freshwater Science Institute has seen numerous births, including four healthy white-tip reef shark pups, seahorses, and numerous species of coral, all being grown for placement in the future aquarium.

It is crucial to the vitality of our economy as well as the education of our children to encourage young people to pursue careers in the sciences. Providing dynamic learning opportunities that immerse students in different fields of study (such as the Marine Institute) creates much more impact than merely reading a textbook or watching a video, and is a prudent investment in our community.

Position: Administrative Assistant/Office Manager
Status: Full Time
Salary Range: $13-$15 per hour, or more depending on experience

The Living Planet Aquarium located in Sandy has an immediate opening for a bright and energetic person to assist with office and administrative responsibilities.  This full-time position will assist senior managers including CEO, CFO and other managers in various accounting and administrative functions.

Duties include:

·         Daily data entry into Excel and QuickBooks accounting system including daily receipts, invoices and credit cards.  Assist with payroll processing.  Bank reconciliations, benefit administration.  filing, and other duties as assigned.

·         Administrative assistance, miscellaneous projects and errands, follow up with contacts, schedule appointments, prepare for meetings.

·         Attend monthly Board meetings and record minutes.  Prepare and distribute agendas, minutes, and other board reports.

·         Assist with scheduling for various departments, help department managers with inventory purchasing and inventory counts, maintain and organize job applications, set up interviews, screening and contact references.

Position offers potential to take on greater responsibilities including promotion to key management position.  Must exhibit ability to handle assignments from more than one person, exhibit outstanding organizational skills, take on new responsibilities on short notice with a positive attitude, trustworthy, very organized, and must have the aptitude for numbers and details.  Flexible schedule.

Position: Prep Cook
Reports To: Guest Services Manager
Status: Full Time
Pay Range : $7-$8 DOE

Position Summary:
The Prep Cook coordinates daily food set up and preparation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Qualifications Necessary to Perform the Job:
Prep Cooks must possess previous experience in customer service roles, food preparation and basic knowledge of kitchen operations. Must have a current food handler’s permit or be willing to obtain one. The candidate should also have excellent time management, communication, organization and leadership skills.

Physical Demands of the Job:
This job requires extended periods of standing and some light lifting; 20-30 pounds.

The Guest Services Host will primarily be responsible for ensuring the highest level of service quality for our visitors and proper handling of all transactions.

The Guest Services Host will need to possess previous experience in retail, food service or other customer service role. The candidate should have excellent presentation, communication and organizational skills.
