The following workshops offered by the Living Planet Aquarium education staff is part of the Teacher Resource Program (TRP). We are currently in the fifth year of this program. Funding for TRP was provided by the Utah State Legislature and the Utah State Office of Education’s ISEE (Informal Science Education Enhancement) programs

Exploring Earth’s Ocean: Why Do We Explore/How Do We Explore Combined Workshop

This special workshop is presented in conjunction with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Ocean Exploration and Research and the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer.

For the first time in Utah, NOAA will bring this STEM workshop for teachers of grades 5-12. Exploring Earth’s Oceans is a combination of two NOAA workshops that are based around the mission of the Okeanos Explorer research vessel, America’s first Federal ship dedicated to ocean exploration. Participants will receive instructional materials and resources along with an introduction to the Okeanos Explorer and her mission as well as information on her continuing contributions to scientific understanding and how to access them.

Breakfast and lunch will be served, and participants will be eligible for USBE relicensure points OR .5 USBE credit.

When: March 4. 2017

Time: 8AM to 4PM

Three Dimensional Science: Stability and Change in Marine Ecosystems

This free workshop is correlated to the new 6th grade SEEd standards that will be implemented across Utah in the 2017-2018 school year. Teachers will learn about three dimensional science instruction as introduced by the Next Generation Science Standards and how they can apply this exciting instructional model for their students. In this workshop, participants will learn how to teach using phenomenon, engage students with science practices, and identify and emphasize cross-cutting science concepts.

All participants will receive a lesson plans and teaching materials correlated to standard 6.4, Stability and Change in Ecosystems, from the new SEEd standards. These lesson plans are geared towards 6th grade teachers, but can easily be used as a starting point for 7-8th grade teachers looking to adapt existing lesson plans into the 3D model. Additionally, participants will receive 3 relicensure points and a materials kit (one per school).
