International Coastal Cleanup - Utah 2011
"Ocean trash ranks as one of the serious pollution problems choking our planet. Far more than an eyesore, a rising tide of marine debris threatens human health, wildlife, communities and economies around the world." (Ocean Conservancy)
What is the Purpose of the
International Coastal Cleanup?
The International Coastal Cleanup is an annual worldwide event orchestrated by the Ocean Conservancy. The purpose of the ICC is to remove trash and debris from the world's beaches and waterways, identify the sources of that debris, and change the behaviors that allow it to reach the ocean in the first place.
When is the International Coastal Cleanup?
Each September, volunteers in over 150 countries join together in the world’s largest volunteer effort for Ocean Health. This year, cleanups in Utah will occur throughout the months of September and October. Organized cleanup events are scheduled for September 10th and 17th, with more being created all the time.
What are Utah’s Past and Present Participation Trends?
In 2010, Utah celebrated its largest ICC participation. With seven cleanup sites and 383 volunteers, we successfully removed 2,680 pounds of trash.
In 2011, we hope to double those numbers! With your help, we can expand the reach and impact of the ocean conservancy to our home by participating in the ICC to cleanup Utah’s waterways.
This is where you come in. We need your help. Whether time, energy, or any other resource, your donation is much needed and greatly appreciated.
How Can I get involved?
The International Coastal Cleanup has many ways in which volunteers can get involved. Any amount of help is needed and appreciated. Here are a few ways you can assist in the 2011 ICC:
- Your business, organization, or group can host a cleanup location of your choice.
- Your business, organization, or group can participate in a pre-planned, public cleanup (planned by the Living Planet Aquarium, Friends of Great Salt Lake, Great Salt Lake Institute, or other sponsor).
- In-kind donation (specifically for product-based businesses) or donation of needed resources (funds, T-shirts, cleanup supplies, etc)
