Do I need a science background to volunteer at the Aquarium?
At this time, our volunteer positions do not require a science background; however we do require a science interest. If you would like to volunteer for our in-house programs teaching the public interesting facts about animals and conservation, assisting at events, helping with birthday parties, building exhibits and cleaning tanks, having a background and an interest in science is a benefit.
How may I monitor the progress of my application?
The Living Planet Aquarium volunteer program uses e-mail as its primary method of communication and will keep applicants informed on availability for position, interviews, orientations and results of background checks.
Are all volunteer candidates accepted?
While we attempt to find a compatible match for each applicant, it is not always possible to find a volunteer role that is appropriate for both the applicant and the department. In such situations where there is not a position available, field programs are suggested as an option and the applicant will be notified if a position for which they are suitable becomes available.
What happens after I submit my online volunteer application?
Within about a week, you will be contacted to set up a time for either an in-person or phone interview to discuss your interest in the volunteer program at The Living Planet Aquarium. The interview process also includes a background check.
After I have been accepted into the volunteer program, what is the next step?
The first step after you have been accepted to the Living Planet Aquarium Volunteer Program is to attend the mandatory volunteer orientation session. These sessions are periodically held on Saturdays for new volunteers to attend. All accepted volunteers will be notified of the open orientation dates. The orientation lasts about 4 hours and consists of a policy and procedure review, paperwork completion, facts and information about our aquarium and its animals, tour of the aquarium, general Utah ecological information, guest service training, and you will receive your volunteer uniform.
Do I have to wear a uniform?
Yes, all volunteers must wear the approved uniform while volunteering at the aquarium. The uniform is made up of a volunteer T-shirt (provided by the aquarium), name tag with volunteer hanging tab to indicate if a volunteer or volunteer in training (provided by the aquarium), khaki pants (you provide) and close toed shoes (provided by the aquarium). Knee length shorts and Capri pants are suitable.
Is there a fee to volunteer?
At this time there is not a fee for volunteering at the Living Planet Aquarium.
Where do I park when volunteering at the Aquarium?
When volunteering at the Living Planet Aquarium we ask that you park on the east side of the parking lot.
I have a large group of people; can we volunteer at the Aquarium?
We do accept large groups volunteering at the aquarium. In the case of businesses, scouts, sports teams, clubs and other interested parties, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator volunteer@thelivingplanet.com so that the appropriate program can be determined for your group.
